Childhood Obesity

Ladies and Gentlemen, our country is facing a rising health problem. This is almost to EPIDEMIC proportion. You asked what is she talking about?

AIDS, CANCER, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE ?

NO neither of them.

IT IS CHILDHOOD OBESITY.

According to the National Commission on Role of School and Coummunity in Improving Adolescent Health “For the first time in the history of the country, young people are less health and less prepared to take their places in society than were their parents” Afraid to Eat.

In 1999, The US Depart of Health and Human Services reported that 13% of children aged 6-11 and 14% between the ages of 12-19 were obese.
In 2003-04, 17.1% of children between 2-19 years old
(12 ½ million children) were overweight.
Girls 13.8% in 1999, 16.0% in 2004.
Boys: 14.0 % 1999 to 18.2% in 2004.

Today, We have discussed the causes, dangers and ways to control childhood obesity.

Let’s begin with the causes. We are going to look at, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits and genetics.

Well you say… I know what the cause is …the child doesn’t need to watch so much television, play too many video games,
and chat on the computer,... and they don’t need to be eating so much..
. Give them enough food to feed a little bird … and then make them go outside.
Now, it is your responsibility… mom and dad… to make them play and be active.
If you have to chase them around with a stick to make them exercise, then do it.
This is what society will think when they see an overweight child.
Well, that is not always the case.
You can probably agree that children today have more indoor activities than outdoor activities to choose from.
They can watch over 200 cable channels on television,
play video games,
or chat with their friends on the computer.

Then, comes the unhealthy eating habits.
Moms work too, children go to day care
(more than 80% of children of working parents go to day care)
parents do not have time to get supper on the table at a decent hour so they
order something to eat.
More times today the question is where do you want me to go than what would you like me to fix
people eat out more, the portion sizes are largest
Weight watcher’s member are advised :
When McDonald’s first opened up their average meal was the size of a happy meal. Now, it is supersized.
And you get more bang for your buck when you order in larger quantities, right?
When you go shopping for dishes:
even, the plates sizes are larger than they were in the 1950’s. the dinner plate was the size of a salad plate.
and most children are still encouraged to be members of the clean plate club. Eat everything on your plate and you’ll get ….
Even though sedentary life styles and unhealthy food choices are part of the problem so is another cause: genetics.
Children are obese because their parents are obese .
Yes, the way your parents, grandparents, aunts uncles look can also factor in if your child can be obese.
Are you surprised? I was too.
I was expecting (just like everyone else)
that the reason children are obese was because their parents were lazy
and let them grow up in front of the televisions/video game/ computer
and wouldn’t cook their meals or give them healthier choices. Money is tight and it is cheaper to buy chips and dips than apples and celery.
My feeling was it is the Parents fault, not because the parents are obese but because of other factors?
Boy was I wrong.
Genetics do have a part in this also. The National Institute of Health’s website says that 75-80% of the percent body fat or PBF in children was due to genetics
, while 20-25% is attributed to other factors – eating habits and physical activity.

Since we have discussed the causes, let’s look at the dangers.

The most common side effect is cardiovascular disease. According to CDC’s website, 60% of overweight children between 5 and 17 had at least 1 CVD risk factor and 25% had 2 or more.
Risk factors are high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and abnormal glucose tolerance.
Additional health risks:
asthma
Fatty degeneration of the liver. when overweight the liver produces an enzyme to reduce the fat in the body. Weight loss helps to reduce that enzyme.
sleep apnea –Happens in 7% of all overweight children. Sleep apnea can cause someone to stop breathing for about 10 seconds at time while sleeping. Usually people wake up. Sometimes they never wake up.
Type 2 diabetes- also known as adult onset diabetes is now emerging as a health related problem among children,-which brings greater risk factors such as CVD and kidney failure, according to the CDC.
According to Dr. Tracy Vicari, LRNP at Tampa Medical Partners, Inc. she stated that she already has one documented case of diabetes in the overweight child she has as a patient in her office.
Overweight children often become obese adults. according to the CDC.

These are the health risks but there are also emotional dangers which can magnify the health risks.

We have looked at the causes and dangers- lets look ahead to the future of how to help control childhood obesity.
We have to say control childhood obesity because there is really no cure. Sure, when these children become adults there is always the drastic measure of surgical weight loss methods. According to my interview, the LRNP advised against that for any child or person.
According to the CDC, the best way to control obesity is to:
Balance diet with exercise, remembering that the goal for overweight children and teens is to reduce the rate of weight gain while allowing normal growth and development.
In order to do this, parents, family members and friends can encourage the children to have healthier eating habits. Parents can look for healthier ways to prepare favorite meals and they can remove the calorie-rich foods and replace with healthier alternatives. Yes, make the child more active and reduce sedentary time.

Small changes every day can lead to a recipe for success!

We have discussed the causes, dangers and ways to control childhood obesity.

Remember, Overweight children often become obese adults.

This is the speech I will be giving on Monday. Pray that I still have the courage I have right now when I get up in front of the class. This is not grammatically perfect.. because speeches are not read from a "term paper". The ... are pauses in my speech and the capital letters are for emphasis.

I have a little time....

to post. Woohoo!!!

Here's how the weight loss is going. 19# so far. 1 more to get a new outfit. But I may wait until 30# because I went to Old Navy and bought 3 shirts in a size L and had been buying XXL. So that is great. The dress, pants and skirt size haven't changed much.

I would lose more weight if I were not so lazy. But it is hard to put an exercise routine in your daily routine when you are having to do a mom's job (take care of the inside of the house) a dad's job (yard work and garbage) a working woman's job(work) and a student's job (go to class). And I consider myself really fortunate that I can go to work in my office instead of the office (work at home). These are the physical things to do. I remember when I got saved, that I couldn't find enough excuses to read my Bible and pray everyday but God worked that out. He will work out the weight lose in HIS time not mine. I have to keep remembering that.

Class is going pretty good, too. There again, I took on another feat that I had to step out of my comfort zone, except because of my ways - I gave myself a double whammy- go back to school and oh by the way, Missy go ahead and take a public speaking class, you chicken!!
Well, suffice to say, I am getting better at the public speaking thing. My first speech was on Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco. I thought I blew it BIG TIME! I made a C (75), that is only 10% of my grade. Then, the next one was on Chihuahuas with a power point presentation, I did better- C (78). I knew what power point was. How to use it? I was the only one in class not familiar-but my tutor Grace helped me. Want to have some fun--- go back to school when your children go to college and get them to help you on their breaks. What a riot!!!

Wednesday the 18th was the mid term exam. I was up until Midnight Tuesday-up @ 345am for work, worked until 1015, school, then back to work @ 230-430. Whew was I tired but I did get a nap before Church!! Or I would have slept during prayer meeting.

Monday is my next speech. Once I give it and polish it up, I will post it on my blog. This is called a status report speech. You'll be surprised what I found.

I'mmmmmmmmmmmmm Baaaaaaaaaaaccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it has been a long time since I had some time to post.
It has been busy around here. Here's what is going on!!

1. With Grace home from school, we try to spend a little extra time together. We aren't clothes shopping this year, yet. I have promised my wallet not to spend any more money on clothes until I lose 20#s. Well still haven't reached that. I lose 1.5 and gain 1 back.. THIS IS FRUSTRATING!! But I will not fail. I have God on my side. I keep praying and trying.

2. I started school on 6/27/07. Public Speaking. I had my first speech on 7/9/07. It was scary. Most of the people in my class are younger than Grace!!!
I got up there, started my speech, stammered and stuttered through it. The professor (he's got a doctorate in mass communications!) gave me the symbol to hurry up. I put on the brakes and ended right there. I was soooo scared. But he was generous and gave me a 75. That is a C and even though I am not happy with it. I will take it for right now. The grade is within company guide lines and I can still get the course paid for. I can only improve from there!. It was 10% of my grade and now that I have the initial shock of getting up and speaking in front of everyone, i know I can do better. Besides, this is the first grade I have gotten in almost 9 years when I went to work with Aetna and had training class.

3.I have been having a pretty consistant Jr. Church. Bethany, Kodi, Matthew, Jr., Micayla, Madison, Seth, Matthew, Isaac and Autumn all live in the same house now. So i usually have Bethany, Kodi, Micayla, Madison and Seth in Jr. Church. We just got through with a contest of learning the 10 commandments. Bethany got to go to Cici's Pizza with me on Sunday. The other children were upset but we will continue to work on them and when everyone learns them and can cite them in church, then we will go again.
In fact, they were so upset that David and Vera took them to Cici's for lunch too. Vera explained to them that they were going because they were hungry not because Miss Missy took Bethany. Bethany and I were eating at the table behind them and she said.
" I am truly blessed, I am having lunch with my family and someone from my church."

I had gotten a little upset too because I felt really bad for Micayla she tried so hard but couldn't say them in order and word perfect.

If you are going to teach the word of God, you have an obligation to teach it right!

'nuff said!

But when Bethany said that. I just had to say thank you God for getting me back on track!

Grace is still teaching Sunday School and she has a visual that she is teaching them too, which will help them remember the 10 commandments.
We are also learning about the 10 plagues. They have learned 3 of them and will start on #4 on Sunday.
Sunday is a special day. Mrs. Dolores Harris, age 94 (I think) passed away and her family is having a memorial service. The church is taking donations for new hymnals in her honor and the family will be donating too. We are having dinner on the grounds. Baptists and FOOD--- now, that is fellowship. I am making cottage pie (basically shepherd's pie with turkey), chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate icing, and pink lemonade pie. No peanut butter pie this time as I want to do something different. Besides, the men'a advance is on the 27th and 28th and Steve Smith is preaching and I know he will need peanut butter pie. I will make an extra one for him and his family to enjoy.

Grace went up to the Pastor the other week and advised him "I ain't singing until you sing with me." Forgive her English, she will only be a Junior in college next year. Well, I went home thinking, now where can I go to church because I know for sure that the Pastor is going to ask me to leave because my daughter decided to tell the Preacher what to do. And when I went to another church, well my reputation will be there before me. Well, he called her bluff and they sang 7/3, just over in the glory land and then did a repeat performance on Sunday 7/8/07. In fact, Brother Gay and Kevin Hand thought that Pastor was going to hold the book for Grace and when he started singing, I heard they were shocked!
... and yes, I think the Pastor is going to let us stay at Smyrna.
What a blessing Grace has been this year to our Pastor. She made him an acapella CD of her (singing) for his birthday, got him to sing with her. What memories! I told her that everyone will have those memories forever.

This has been a jam packed week. Monday and Wednesday my schedule is:
4 am-10 am work
11:15 am-2:20 pm class
2:30 pm -4:30 pm work

this is give or take a few minutes if I don't get to work early enough.

Monday night: went to Hope Children's home for Back to school revival heard Tommy Odom, Seagate Baptist church. I had the honor of taking my Pastor and his wife with me. They called me their chaffuer, cause I drove.
Tuesday night: went to Hope Children's home for Back to school revival heard Tommy Odom, Seagate Baptist church. I had the honor of taking my Pastor and his wife with me. They called me their chaffuer, cause I drove.
Wednesday night: went to my own church
Thursday night: went to West Gate Baptist Church- Grace wanted to see Brother Shaw and his wife. We heard Dr. Woodbury ( I think that was his last name, I know it is Wood something). He was very good. He preached on the 7 reasons for local church membership. It was a long sermon, but he was fascinating and really kept your interest. Very smart man.
Also, got to see the Vernoys minus the McCobbs. It was great to see their smiling faces. Jayde walked up to me and asked do you remember me. I at first said no but then said of course. Jewel looks more like Jackie than I thought. Jayde sat with Grace and me in church. I also got to see Brenda- I haven't seen her since the Mother Daughter tea on May 19th. She looks good too.
Friday night: I might just have to stay home and practice my speech for class on Monday while I wash clothes. Or I might need to catch up on my sleep.
Saturday morning: door to door visitation, cook for Sunday

Now, Rita, you are caught up. It was great seeing you last night!!
